What Are Pharmaceutical Impurity Reference Standards?

Learn what pharmaceutical impurity reference standards are, why laboratories use them in method development and quality control, and how to enquire for them.

Why impurities matter

Any pharmaceutical substance can contain small amounts of related materials: starting materials, by-products of synthesis, degradation products formed during storage, or isomers. Laboratories working on analytical development need to detect, identify and measure these substances, and to do that reliably they compare samples against well-characterised reference materials of the impurities themselves.

These reference materials are commonly called impurity standards. Many carry a pharmacopoeial designation, such as an EP impurity letter or a USP related compound name, which links them to a monograph that describes the analytical test.

How laboratories use impurity standards

Impurity standards are used to confirm the identity of peaks in chromatography, to establish retention times, to check method specificity, and to support validation work such as linearity and limits of detection. Degradation products are used in stability-indicating method development, while nitrosamine and N-oxide standards support specialist testing programmes.

Because the purpose is analytical comparison, the exact identity of the material matters. Always quote the CAS number and the full impurity name, including any pharmacopoeial letter, when making an enquiry.

Impurities in the Cadulac Chemicals Ltd catalogue

The Impurities & Reference Standards category is the largest in our catalogue. It covers named impurities, related compounds, metabolites, nitroso compounds, N-oxides, dimers and isomers for a broad range of active substances. You can browse the category page, or search by CAS number for a specific listing.

Documentation, characterisation data and specifications are confirmed upon enquiry for each product. Tell us which documents your laboratory requires and the quantity you need in milligrams, grams or kilograms.

Professional use only

All impurity standards supplied by Cadulac Chemicals Ltd are intended for professional laboratory, research and analytical use. Buyers are responsible for lawful purchase, handling and use under the requirements that apply to them.
